It’s Summer time, looking for something refreshing? How about a Rosé, something that’s HOT, cool and refreshing all it once.
BinWise’s data tracks some of the best wine programs in the country, and as Spring turns to Summer it’s clear that Rosé sales are hot. Based on sales data aggregated on Binwise during summer months (encompassing 3M+ glasses of wine), we discovered some interesting insights.
French Rosés punch well above their weight: while France produces less than a third of the world’s Rose, they dominate the market with 50% of sales. Italy and the US come in a distant second and third respectively, about in line with the amount of wines produced. With the US charging into the market with increased domestic production, expect those numbers to change when we republish our findings at the end of the summer.
Rosé sells better than Pinot Grigio: Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc still hold the edge, but the days of Pinot Grigio being the reliable go-to may be on the wane.

Really cool info, would be curious to see top US producers. Roses should be drunk all year around…
I am very surprised to see that Domaine Tempier is not in the Top 20 Rosé Producers list, not only because I love it, but also becasue I feel like I see it on a lot of Wine Lists.
We are only currently pouring a French and a Domestic Rose BTG. After reading this blog I now want to look into finding some good Italian Rose options to pour BTG, as well as increasing the number of Rose selections I am offering by the bottle, I would not have guessed that there was more Italian Rose being sold than Domestic Rose. Very interesting post. Thanks BinWise!
@August West, Domaine Tempier is one of my favorites as well, balancing both intensity and grace with a beautiful herbal, spicy edge. We see a lot of Tempier on lists out there, but (we think) because of a higher price-point, doesn’t make the best-seller list. For a future post, we might look at price sensitivity in relation to sales for a specific type of wine–thanks for the idea!
Interesting data about France dominating the rose world, I thought Spain would have a larger presence. I typically don’t go to Italy for rose, they do pinot grigio much better in my opinion.
Interesting! I hardly ever drink Rose, not my go to, I prefer a refreshing Kerner, but will have to give Rose a try.
I love drinking rose year round, and its wonderful that there are more wineries here in california producing really great rose. The california roses are a really different style than the french ones I have had. I like them both and its nice to have options so I have something that can match my mood. I also like that most of the restaurants in my neighborhood have more than one or two roses on the list so there is always something to like!
I have been enjoying the Knauss Trollinger Rose at High Treason. It is the first Germany Rose I have ever tried and it is delicious. A perfect pairing for summer time in The City!
